Diary Post #11

Today I filmed the majority of the film. It went very well as I filmed the shots smoothly, and the locations were all in close range, which meant that the actors didn't get tired. It was a sunny day so gave off the right feel that I wanted to pursue in my film. The fight scene went well as I had many different ways to film it. I was able to film it from an Ariel shot. When I filmed the POV shots I had to make it look convincing that the weapons were hitting one another, I filmed them many times in different speeds. I think I will have to speed up the slower shots when I edit to make it look more convincing as well as more robot like.

Diary post #10

Today I started editing together the green screen footage that I filmed for the news presenter part. This went successfully as I have used green screen before, I now have to add subtitles to it so that it looks more like the news.

Diary Post #9

Today I filmed the parts where we see the making of the robot. I got together some computer parts and laid them on the back of Seth. We tried to connect it to him standing up, however it fell off, therefore we led him on the floor and set up the computer parts to him. It was hard to make it look realistic, therefore I will have to crop the footage to make it look more realistic and believable. I may film some more bits that focus on the object that is connected to him to give it more of a Sci-fi feel.

Diary Post #8

Today I filmed some of the scenes of Alice's brother. I tried creating the shot where you can see the brother on the phone as well as his shadow. However this didn't turn out right as I couldn't get the shot to look how I wanted. Therefore I'm going to have to re-film this bit. I also filmed some parts where he's going to after the robot, however these didn't have the grainy feel I wanted. Therefore I'm going to have to find somewhere else where I can use a brick wall.

Diary #7

Today I filmed some of the shots in school. It went successfully as the weather was muggy which gave off the negative emotions that the robot is feeling. However the sky was still bright which shows that Alice coming into his life is a good thing for him. Whilst filming I decided to add in a pan which represents the moment his life started to get better after being alone at school. I may have to record the sound over the top of what we have already filmed as the background sound was too noisy.

Animatic

This is my animatic story board, I plan for my film to include these shots as well as this music. Some of the shots may vary as well as the music, as many things can change when filming or editing. The animatic has given me some idea of how my trailer will look, and I am now a lot happier with how my trailer will come together.

Costumes

Costumes from holly_bondg321

This is a slideshare of my costumes that my characters will be wearing. I have written about how it represents their characters and the type of costumes that they will be wearing.

Shot List

This is my shot list for when I go and film. I have done it in chronological order, however when I go and film I will split it into the shots of the locations I am filming in. I will make sure that the actors change their clothes in order for it to look like a film where the characters change clothes. I took me a long time to come up with the shots that I wanted to use. This was because I was trying to think too much about how it will look as a trailer. Whereas what I needed to do is think about the narrative as a whole and tell the story through the narrative instead of trying to cut the narrative up completely and put it all over the place.

Story Board

This is my storyboard. These is my initial plan for how I'm going to film my trailer, I'm hoping that all of the shots will be successful, I think most of them will be achievable. I have drawn out what kind of shot it's going to be instead of writing out what it's going to be as I work more visually rather than on text. I will use the shot list to help me film, and I will take pictures of the story board encase I need to remind my self of the exact shot I need.

Diary Post #6

I am currently working on improving my magazine films. I have saved some images from the internet and have been making my own magazine front covers from them. I am slowly getting better at understanding Photoshop as well as improving my skills. I have filmed some footage, and will be filming more today.

Intertitles Analysis

This is a slideshow where I have analysed the intertitles. I have looked at the type of backgrounds they are shown over, and what type of information is revealed through the use of intertitles. This will help me to decide what I will put in my film, as well as the type of shots I need to think about in order to portray the emotions I want the audience to feel whilst watching the trailer.

Locations

These are some of the locations that I will be using, so that the trailer looks as if it were a real film with lots of different locations. Some of these pictures are the actual locations that I will be using, and the others are locations that will be similar to the ones in the pictures. Now that I have planned my locations I will have a much better idea of where to film my trailer.

Audience Research

I carried out a survey on survey monkey asking my target audience an array of questions. From the survey I found what sort of hobbies my characters should have so that the audience can relate, as well as how to create tension. For example I found out that people found similar films interesting as they know that artificial intelligence could exist in our world. Therefore I need to make my film as realistic as possible to scare the audience into thinking that this could be their own world.

Diary post #5

I am continuing to plan my story board. I had complications as I still wasn't sure what to put in my trailer. I have now started by adding in more aspects to the film to add to the thriller genre of the film. I am also referring to other trailers for inspiration and to look for a variety of shots that I will use in my trailer.

Lighting analysis

The lighting in Ex Machina is dark. There are lots of silhouettes and harsh shadows. This enhances the genre of the film which is Sci-fi Thriller. It gives the film an eerie atmosphere to it, as one of the genres is thriller, therefore the shadows add suspense to the film. However there are some warmer shots of the robot which could connote innocence about the character, however the man is shown in shadows which suggests that he is the villain in propps character roles. I would like to use some dark harsh shadows in my film to show the difference between the good and bad characters as well as the situation that they are in.

The trailer opens with a shot of the sea, this is a very light and calming shot. The predominant colours are purples and blues, suggesting that this film is going to sad. Some of the shots are very warm, with light shadows, that still show the contrast between the characters. Natural lighting is used a lot to light the scene as it creates a warm natural glow, and doesn't make it look like it's as constructed. It creates a more naturalistic element to it rather than a sci-fi thriller theme to it. Other shots use light and dark to show the juxtaposition of the characters situation, this creates suspense and shows what the characters may be working towards. I would like to use some warm naturalistic lighting shots, particularity some that suggest innocence but also create suspicion about the character. The shot where the light is shining fro behind the character is one that I want to use in my film in one part, and it has been demonstrated well by combining two of the shots in this trailer.

Magazine Practice

This is the first practice magazine front cover that I have ever made. I am not very familiar with Photoshop and aim to improve my skills for my actual magazine cover by taking pre made entertainment weekly magazines and trying to recreate them in my spare time. This will help me to think about the positioning of my characters and what text I'm going to put on the magazine. I tried to put in things such as pugs, however I didn't get time to put any text on the pug. When I add more text, it will look more like a magazine post. However, all over the image is terrible, therefore I need to improve a lot and give more consideration into how the characters will be set out on the page. As I didn't have a lot of time to think about what my magazine was going to look, therefore this piece of work was rushed and I couldn't manipulate the images to look how I wanted them to.

Warner Brothers and Working Title

These are the production companies that I shall be using to produce my film.

Institution Research

This is my film institution research which will help me to come to a conclusion of what production company I shall be using for my film. I have looked into what country they are based in and what type of films they make, and the impact that the production company would have on my film.

Sunday 15 November 2015

Trailer Practice

This is our preliminary task to practice what it will be like to film our real trailers when it comes to it. We have used a range of shots to make it look like these are shots that have been taken from parts of film to make up a trailer. I would make the inter-titles more interesting and I would get rid of the glitches when it comes to my real trailer. I have learnt that editing is very important to try and make things look a lot more interesting than they may be in the actual trailer it self.

Props

These are the props that I am going to need to use for my trailer. I am included objects such as school objects to set the school environment. Also I have got technology based objects as the trailer is about a robot and technology will have a big influence on the trailer. I have included wires an parts from computers to show what type of things I'm going to use to recreate the inside of a robot. I think I will include extreme close ups of these to suggest that it's the insides of the robot.

Wednesday 11 November 2015

Schedule for Filming

This is a calender where I have written down a planned schedule of when I will film for my media project. I have also written down when I will be filming for my film studies project, as this will just as time consuming. Planning out what I will do with my time has helped me because I now have a clear vision of what I want to do.

Friday 6 November 2015

Diary Post #4

I have started to think about story boarding my trailer. However I am finding this quite hard because I have to pick out different elements from the film, and make it as engaging as possible. I need to use a range of shots to show off different skills, and to show the different settings that I will be using. I think to help me, I am going to use the 14 steps I planned out for my film, mix them up to see what would create the most exciting trailer, and then I shall plan the shots from there on. I also know that I need to a few music tracks in my trailer, therefore I will need to plan what sort of mood I want to portray in each section of the trailer, and when the sections will change.

Entertainment Weekly Analysis - Mad Max

  • The font for the title of the film is chunky, bold and white. It's eye grabbing and suggests that it's going to be a brutal action packed film. The skull in the middle of the "A" connotes that the film may be outgoing, and that it has been made for older audiences.
  • Above the title of "MAD MAX" there is information that advertises what's in the film in smaller underlined font with different pastel colours. This is to fill the audience with adrenaline, and to sway their curiosity so that they will want to go and see the film.
  • "Entertainment Weekly" had been positioned behind the main character in a dirty yellow colour. Even though yellow is predominantly a bold eye catching colour, I find it hard to pay attention to the title, when the main characters face has been positioned over the top of it. This suggests that the producers wanted their target audience to be drawn into the film, more than bothering with reading the title of the magazine.
  • In lighter black text, information about Star Wars is placed in the clear background next to the character. The word "Star Wars" is in bold to draw in the attention of the fans. The font is well known by everyone as all audiences will know of the film, and therefore even if you aren't an active fan of star wars, it will still grab any audiences attention as it's so well known.
  • A close up of the main character staring into the camera takes up the majority of the magazine cover. This is extremely eye catching as the image is so big, and the audience are drawn in as the character pulls them in by addressing them directly. The character is dressed in many shades of brown, with scars and dirt across his face with a blank expression. This makes the audience curious as they want to find out what the film is about, as the different textures of clothing and scars create mystery as to what the character has been through.
  • The lighting gives  a soft glow to his face, however harsh shadows are created, creating curiosity as to whether this character is meant to be good or bad.
  • A Puff is used at the top of the magazine cover, overlapping the title, this stands out as it uses different colours to the colour scheme. However it's so small that it's hard to read, therefore the producer still wants the audience to pay attention to Mad Max instead.

Entertainment Weekly Analysis- Hunger Games

  • The font use is bold, formal and bubbly. This gives a sophisticated tone to the magazine, as well as a friendly welcoming tone. The mastheads are in white, suggesting that these are the most important parts of the magazine cover as they inform the audience on what the magazine is and what it's about.
  • However the other titles are in yellow and orange, suggesting that they aren't as important as the ones in white. The orange and yellow titles match the background colours of the fire, therefore it suggests to the audience that this information is to do with "Catching Fire."
  • The women is facing towards the audience, addressing them, but her body is turned away, suggesting that she has authoritative power and is walking into battle, putting on a show for anyone who thinks that she is week. Her arrows are in shot, showing her signature weapon, drawing in the attention of fans of the film.
  • The male stands looking and faced towards the camera with his weapon at the same height as him. This could suggest that he stands behind his weapon as a mask, as he looks towards the audience for help. Both of the characters are positioned in front of the text, making them the first thing that audience see, catching their attention. This positioning makes the audience feel as if they have to help the characters, and therefore are more likely to buy the magazine as they want to find out information on the film.
  • A puff is used in a dark orange, advertising what else is in the magazine. The puff is placed at the top above the titles. Even though the background is very busy the puff still stands out as it has been positioned at a duller point in the background. Audiences can then notice it and find out about what else is in the magazine.
  • The background is a hot fire, which contrasts against the icy blue background. The two of these may have been placed together as they show how the film is going to include action and violence, but then the blue suggests how there is a deeper meaning behind the film and that the characters will be put through harsh decisions as well.

  • I would like to use the technique of placing the character in front of the text as it is more eye grabbing and shows the importance of the character. I also like the busy background as it makes the magazine more appealing rather than if there was just a plain background.

Entertainment Weekly Magazine Analysis - Scream

  • The photography takes up most of the magazine cover, the picture is of one of the main characters looking towards the camera, addressing the audience and making them feel victimised.
  • The colour scheme of red black and white, draws the audience's attention to the magazine as all of these colours are very bold and compliment each other.
  • A tight frame has been chosen so that the character takes up most of the magazine cover, informing the audience on the main feature of the magazine. A mid shot has been chosen so that the scream mask fills the page, as the scream mask is well recognised and will draw in fans of the previous films.
  • Harsh lighting has been chosen to expose all of the different shapes in the scream mask that give it emotion. The light has been positioned above the character so the lighting will create a dramatic effect. This is to empathise the genre of Scream, which is horror.
  • Pugs such as "backstage pass: on tour with Adele" draw in other audiences who would be interested in other celebrities. This will create profit for the magazine as all different age groups and people with different interests will want to buy the magazine.
  • The puffs give more information about what the magazine contains, and draw in those audiences who have an interest in the film. The font is in white, abiding to the colour scheme of the magazine so that it keeps within the genre. However some of the text is in blue which emphasises that Scream is returning, suggesting that it is giving extra information to those fans of Scream.
  • The title and the masthead is in a bubbly font that can be taken seriously, and still presents its self in a formal manor. However at the top of the magazine, some of the text is in a thinner more traditional font, which will talk about less demanded topics, and the other font that is bold, covers topics on celebrities.

  • I would like to use the colour scheme and the dramatic lighting as it all places emphasis on the genre and how dramatic the film is going to be.

Target Audience

My target audience would be for 15-30 year old, who enjoy sci-fi films and fear growing technology. Older audiences may be interested in robot sci-fi films, however because it's about people around the age of 17, and is mostly set in a school, audiences that are 30+ may be less intrigued to watch the film.  The audience should have their own opinion on what they think of AI's, and if they have a negative view on them, then the suspense will be built as the film is also a thriller. The audience may be interested in conspiracy theories and the unknown. Films they would enjoy would be films such as Ex Machina because it includes aspects of the unknown and focuses on technology going too far. they would enjoy the thought that robots could take over the world. The pictures above demonstrate the type of people who would watch my film. I have chosen people who are in their early twenty's to show the majority of ages that would see the film. They don't have to fit into any stereotype as long as they enjoy stereotypes and the debate of what would happen if technology goes to far, creating the thriller aspect of the film.

Bicentennial Man Poster Analysis

From this poster I would like to use the split between the robot and the human. I would want to do this to show the difference between robots and humans, or to show the innocent and the dark side of robots.

Font Analysis

This is my font analysis that I have done using texts from films of the same genre as my trailer. I have looked at the different types of font, separating the fonts into two main categories, to analyse the two types of font in Sci-fi thrillers. I have discussed the effect the font has on the audience, and also what kind of texts I want to have for my trailer.

Ex Machina Poster Analysis

From this poster I would like to use the tag line which is a question. I have learned from this that I would like my audience to be intellectual. I also like the black background as it creates mystery and suspense, which is key for a thriller film.

Response to teacher feedback

I am pleased with my feedback as I am on my way to achieving a band 4. To  improve I am going to read through all of my posts and correct the phrasing and the grammar so that it makes sense. I will also write what I would like to use in my own trailer, and how it will improve my trailer idea. I will analyse my mood board further as well as any other posts that I think need it. I will try to use different theory's to do with audience and narrative, to show my understanding of them.

Friday 9 October 2015

Plot of my film

Here are 14 points that show the plot of film .I can use these in my trailer. I can make shots and phrases that will be useful to use in the film in order to make an interesting trailer.

Conforming to the Genre

This is a chart showing how my film trailer conforms to the conventions of the sci-fi thriller genre. I have gone through different scenarios in the film to show points where if I didn't have them in the film then it wouldn't conform to the genre.

Diary #3

After writing the synopsis for my film, as well as creating the characters, I now have got inspiration for shots I want to use in my film, as well as dialogue. For example I may record the creator's voice to explain the situation with the robot, as if he was speaking to the robot. This would play throughout different parts in the film. Also as I wouldn't be able to find someone who would be able to play the creator, I may just film the creators hands so that it's anonymous who he is. I now feel that I can write my 14 point of my film as well as the location's I'm going to use for my trailer.

Character Profiles

  •  These are my character profiles for the main characters. I have put information about their personality and what role's they play in the film. I have also briefly drawn what sort of clothes they may wear in the film, to give more depth to the character. This will help me to direct the actors in how to play the characters, as well as giving them some facts about the characters so that they can portray them correctly. I now know the names of the characters so when developing my film further I will know what  names to include.

  • Also I can start to look for people who I think would be suited for the role of the characters, to ensure that I get the best possible outcome when creating my trailer.

  • I can think about the dialogue that I will include in my trailer now that I know the back story of my characters, and how they feel on a day to day basis.

Interstellar Trailer Analysis

Intertitles:

The first intertitles to be shown are the production companies, after they have introduced the setting and problem in the film. The next inter-titles are used to advertise the films that some audiences may be familiar with, therefore they would have trust in the film and would be enticed to watch it. The inter-titles don't give much away about the narrative, therefore it is left for the audience to listen and watch in order to find out what happens.
  • "From Christopher Nolan"
  • "Director of The Dark Night and Inception"
  • "It was never meant to die here"
  • "InterStellar"

Music:
  • The music used is mostly made out of stringed instruments, to create soft and harsh emotions in the trailer.
  • At the beginning the music is very quiet and suspenseful, this is so that the audience can listen to the dialogue in order to find out the dilemma in the film. This gives them the chance to be able to decide whether this is a film that they would consider watching.
  •  Also the lack of music at the beginning of the trailer, shows the mundane lives of the characters. Therefore as the music slowly gets louder and and more complicated, it's shows the changes in their life, adding emotion, suspense.

Shots and Editing:
The first shot introduces the main character, where he looks like a normal man. However close ups, and fast pace editing is used to show that they have a different life that no one else is aware of. Long shots are used to show the setting that resembles a dystopia. The editing is slow pace to show the relations between the characters, as well as to build up the emotions. Long shots are shown of space, to impress the audience as well as to show the unknown.

Dialogue:
  • The dialogue is used to introduce the setting, as well as the relationship between the characters. Mostly they focus on the relationship between the father and the daughter. The dialogue is played over shots of the world deteriorating to show the hard decision he has to make between whether to save the world or if to stay with his kids.
  • Another character's voice is played over the top of the trailer to show that humanity needs the man to save the world. This entices the audience to watch the film as they would want to see what decision he make sin the end.

Target audience and Genre:
The target audience would be for 15+ as they would be interested in what could happen to the world, and how the human race would go about saving it. They would need to be interested in space and complex ideas of what is in space. The genre is a sci-fi thriller, as it's based on space, needing an intellectual audience to be able to understand the narrative. The audience only see him about to go into space, therefore suspense is built because of the unknown, making the film a thriller.

Special Effects:

  • The main special effects would engage the audience as they would be able to see someone else perspective of space, and the amazing visuals, creating an atmospheric spectacle experience.

From this trailer I would like to recreate the hand holding shot as it's a good way to show a relationship as well as the action that is going on in the film. As I want to include this shot I have learned that I want to show a distinctive relationship between two characters.

Robot and Frank Theatrical trailer analysis

Inter-titles:

The first inter-titles introduce the setting so that the audience are familiar with how technology may progress in the near future. The other inter-titles are at the end of the trailer, showing the ratings that have been given from newspapers. As well as what award wining actors are involved in the film, and "Winner Sundance film festival", this is to impress the audience as well as to make it trust worthy. Followed by the title of the film, laid over the top of the robots face to show how the man has become best friends with a robot.

Music and Dialogue

The music at first is calm, created by stringed instruments, with diegetic sound of the technologies that are around at the time when the film is set. The music then stops when the disruption of the film comes along, which is the robot. More upbeat music then starts to show that there's a change in his life. The music always changes when something new in his life happens, each time choosing a different tempo and a different type of string orientated song. The music becomes rapidly when the film has the most tension and adrenaline in it, to show how serious the film becomes.

The dialogue starts with a robots voice to show how the world is robot dominated. The dialogue introduces the characters and the relationships between them. Sometimes the dialogue will be used as a voice over, whilst shots of what their explaining will be shown over the top.

Shots and Editing:
The beginning is slow paced, as its introducing the setting, a range of shots are used to show his relationships with characters as well as to show off how cinematic the film is. The very first one is an establishing shot to show the type of person frank is as well as the setting. The first shot shown of frank and the robot is a long shot to show how he doesn't agree with robots. However throughout the trailer there are two shots to show how he has began to like the robot. The editing then becomes faster towards the end to create adrenaline, as well as to show that what he is doing is risky, this engages the audience to watch the film as they want to see what happens in the film.

Target audience and Genre:

The target audience would be for an older audience of 30+ as it's a story of an older man. However they use robots in it, therefore that may entice younger audiences. Its quite a slow paced trailer with soft music in it, therefore it is more likely to intrigue older audiences. The genre is justified by the use of shots of Frank conversing with others, as well as close ups of jewels and locks. This show's that the genre is drama and crime.

From this trailer, I would like to use the different music changes to portray the different emotions and themes throughout my trailer.

Wednesday 7 October 2015

Synopsis of Film

This is a synopsis of my film, this will help me to pick out scenes for my trailer, and what emotion I want to put across to the audience.

The Creation

Robots have been used for work only and have been a great help to society. However one man strived to create a robot that could not only resemble a human, but act like one and feel emotion as a human would too. The creator tried and tried to make the robot, he kept on failing over the years, this was the only thing he had to live for. His creation had been up and running for two years, tweaking it make it acceptable and ready to present. His creation became ready, it acted and felt emotion like a human, so much that this robot became like a son to him. The creator was nervous to let the robot out into public. There had been debates that he had attended, bringing up the idea of a robot that could feel human emotion. Whilst people where supportive, the others were very defensive and told him that there should be no thing such as a robot that can feel emotion.

The creator decided as a social experiment to send his robot out into society, under one condition, that he was not allowed to tell anyone that he is a robot. The creator decides to send his robot to school so that he can get qualifications to live his life as a human. The robot is excited for school, some people see him as different and don't like to talk to him. The robot gets upset, he sits by himself at lunch time, not eating as he can't eat, the creator tells him that he is special and that he should pursue in trying to talk to people because that is what he was made for. One day a girl approaches him and tells him how he is different and starts to talk to him. The robot talks to her and for the first time he has been able to full fill his purpose.  The girl finds it strange that the robot hasn't done many activities and doesn't even eat. However she is just looking for a friend too, so she accepts the fact that he is different. The connection is strong between the two, they develop feelings for each other. The creator is unaware of this, therefore when the robot asks if he can bring the girl home, he accepts his request. However when he goes around the girls house she asks him to share a secret, she defines a secret for him. He shares the fact that he is a robot.

The brother is listening in outside their bedroom, he was hoping to make their time together awkward. Her brother doesn't take the fact that he is a robot lightly. He is very much so against robots having feelings, and the fact that his little sister is involved with a robot, made him furious. He gets his friends together and they try to beat up the robot, the sister tells him to hide away because they will kill him.

The robot does not realise it's own strength, and ends up hurting the brother by accident, he malfunctions and the creator has to end up turning him off.

Diary #2

Whilst I am writing my synopsis, I am now unsure of the genre I want my film to be. I knew that I need a disruption in the film so I could follow the structure of Todorov's equilibrium theory. Therefore I needed something to happen to the robot, therefore I came up with the idea that the robot could be used for bad, for example it will be used for stealing things. However I'm finding it hard to come up with an engaging narrative. Therefore I have started trying to think about the different types of characters I could have, in order to be able to shape the narrative around them. This has developed a few other idea's of what I could include to make the film interesting.

Mood Board

This is a mood board full of images that have inspired me, as well as images that I want to use in my film. Images such as the one from Toy Story 2, will remind me of how I want the characters to be presented and played, as well as the type of warm lighting I want to use as well.  This will help me decide the style I want to create in my trailer, as well as locations that I may want to recreate to make my trailer look realistic. I have learned the type of robot I want to use in my film, for example there are an array of robots on the mood board, and I have decided to go with a robot that looks like a human, as it will be more achievable than creating a robot. From the pictures from Robot and Frank and Iron Giant, I  have been able to decided that I want the character and the owner of the robot to have a friendly relationship.

AI Teaser Poster Analysis

From this poster I would like to use the close up of the two main characters. I have learned that it is  important to show the two main characters on the poster in order to give away as much about the film as possible, still with some mystery.

Diary Post #1

After doing some research on the type of film genre I want to make (Sci-fi thriller) I am trying to come up with a plot for my film. I'm finding it tricky to think of an intriguing narrative that would also make an interesting trailer. I know that I want to include a robot, however I am unsure of whether I want the robot to be evil, or whether the characters are going to turn the robot evil. I need to look at other robot related films such as "AI" to help me  get inspiration, without stealing their idea's for my film.

I looked at the Scott Pilgrim trailer to analyse what order the scenes were put in the trailer. It did follow a basic chronological order, however some parts went from one end of the film to another. It kept on swapping from different time frames in the film to make the film seem more appealing. Also it created adrenaline when showing the various action scenes throughout the film, as well as creating dramatic effect and showing the different situation the character has to overcome throughout the film.

I Robot Theatrical Trailer Analysis

This is theatrical trailer of the film I Robot, the trailer is 2 minutes and 26 seconds long.

Intertitles:
The first intertitles shown are 20th century fox, this is shown very quickly in a blue tinted filter, to match the next intertitles that come up on the screen.

The intertitles explain the equilibrium of the film and the plot, along with a voice over that reads the intertitles. This could be done for dramatic effect, as well as to link to how the characters in the film have been brain washed by an advertisement for a better living with robots.

The intertitles briefly introduce the dilemma of the film, and this engages the audience to watch the film as they would want to find out what's going to happen.

"We designed them"
"To be trusted with our homes"
"With our way of life"
"With our world"
"But did we design them"
"To be trusted"
"This summer"
"One man"
"Saw it coming"
"Will Smith"
"I, Robot"

Music/ Dialogue:

The music at the beginning is very suspenseful as it uses violins and ticking noises to create an eerie atmosphere. The sound of objects cutting through air is added when the intertitles come up, to represent how fast the serious problems are happening in this advanced fictional world.

The music then changes to become upbeat when one of the main characters is introduced, to imply that the genre is action.  The music sometimes stops to give dramatic effect, as well as to show a different section in the film.

Guitar based music is used to show that the characters are on a mission, as generically guitar music can be associated with action based missions in a film.
Orchestra's are used to build tension and adrenaline in the trailer, as they are powerful and make the film seem suspenseful.

The dialogue mostly explains the plot, from the main characters point of view, as well as to show the characters opinions on each other.

Shots and Editing:

Establishing shots that use panning are used to introduce the location and characters.
The editing can be fast paced to introduce the current situation in the film.
Slow motion  is used to focus on important characters as well as being used for dramatic effect to show the difficult situation they have to face.

Flares are used to cut quickly to the parts the producers want to show in the film, as well as to continue the theme of  technology over taking human life.

Lots of extreme long shots are used to show that the their could be an army of robots against humanity. Close ups are used for dramatic effect.

In the middle the editing pace gets slower to elaborate on the plot of the film more. However towards the end, at the attempt to reinstall equilibrium the pace is faster as this is when all of the action shots are shown. The pace needs to be fast to build up adreneline and for the audience to be interested to see how the film

Target audience and Genre:

From the high usage of guns, shattering glass and cars we can establish that the film is an action, the fast pace editing helps to build up the adrenaline used in action films. As the film is based on robots malfunctioning, the film is also a Sci-fi.

The target audience would be for 15+ as they would be able to understand how technology can have bad effects on the human race, and how it can malfunction.

Special effects:
The special effects used are to create the robots. In the year of 2004, this would have been new technology, and audiences would have been impressed by the CGI. Therefore this would engage audiences to watch the film as it had new technology in it.

From this trailer I would like to use blue filters to represent the sci-fi genre, as well as to make the shots looks eerie. I have learnt that I want my trailer to have a contrast of themes in order to make the narrative more complex, and to appeal to an intellectual audience.

Generic conventions of Sci-fi thriller

This is my powerpoint explaining the generic conventions of a Sci-fi thriller. As I want my film trailer to be about artificial intelligence, I need to know what sort of things to include in my trailer, such as setting, music and expectations of the narrative. Having already researched into the generic conventions, it will help me to form a more developed idea of what I want my film to consist of, whilst conforming to the expectations of the genre.

Initial Ideas

This is a Prezi presenting my initial idea's for my film. It explains the type of genre I want my film trailer to be, as well as what problems I see with trying to create certain genres. This will help me to develop my ideas further in the future.

Theatrical Note Book Poster Analyisis

As a task we had to analyse a poster in order to know how to analyse the different types of poster, being theatrical or teaser. When I decide upon my genre I will start analyse film posters of that genre so that when I come to create my poster I will be able to create an accurate poster.
